Storytime Guide
A few suggestions for successful storytime visits:

  • Our storytimes are carefully planned with distinct age groups in mind. While siblings are welcome at storytimes, the stories, songs and activities are carefully planned for the target age group.
  • Sit with your child at storytimes and participate. Your child will catch your enthusiasm and watch you for cues.
  • Please silence your cell phones and save adult conversations for afterwards.
  • If you’re interested in something we read at a storytime or a similar book, ask a Youth Services staff member at the Youth Desk.
  • We plan our storytimes with plenty of examples of how you can help prepare your child to read: songs, fingerplays, rhymes, dance, play, and stories read with enthusiasm are all important ways for your child to build the foundation for reading readiness. The Association for Library Service to Children and the Public Library Association have some great tips about what you can do at home because they know, (and we do too) that you are your child’s first, most important teacher. Find those tips in the Getting Ready to Read at Home brochure.

Babies – Lapsit Storytime
20-25 minutes. Just for babies and their grownups! Bring your baby for some cozy, active time on your lap. We’ll have songs, rhymes, a book or two, and plenty of activities for both of you. The storytime is held in the Founders Suite and you are invited to linger and play.

Toddlers – Toddler Time
20-30 minutes. Gentle songs, stories, fingerplays for our youngest patrons. This storytime takes place in the Founders Suite with plenty of room for young ones to move and participate.

3-5 years – Preschool Storytime
30-45 minutes. Longer stories, songs and activities for the more seasoned storytime-goer. Siblings are welcome at this storytime, although parents and caregivers may need to get up and walk with little ones if they get restless. Storytime is held in the Founders Suite.

All ages – Family Storytime
30 minutes. 30 minutes of stories, songs and activities for the whole family! Storytime is held in the Founders Suite.

The Right Book
If you ask a member of the PPL Youth Services Staff what their favorite part of the job is, they will probably say: “helping children and parents get to the right book at the right time.” Please ask us for help! We can recommend specific books and give you booklists to take home . If it is more convenient for you to call or email us with questions, please do!
